Water Project

For many years, the people of Alto Salaverry (a shanty town in the sand dunes right above the orphanage), lived day to day with no accessible potable water. They had been paying for water to be delivered 1 – 2 times per week in 55 gallon barrels. The water was dirty, expensive and not suitable for drinking. The orphanage’s property is blessed with an abundant, clean, underground water source. Hogar de Esperanza first began giving free water to the people by providing a water dispenser outside of the orphanage walls. People would walk 2 miles, up and down the sand dune, to fill their buckets and bottles with our free, agua dulce (sweet water). Within a few years, David Miller was able to work with the Director of Projects, community members, and volunteers to run piping into Alto Salaverry and provide several water dispensing points. As of fall 2008, our water project supplies clean water to over 1,500 families in Alto Salaverry.

“After one dental mission trip to Trujillo, we fell in love with the staff and the children at the albergue so much that we adopted one ourselves.” — Maria, USA
